Why Bonus Month PCB Can Feel Higher in Malaysia
Skip the maths: work out your own numbers with the free Salary Calculator Malaysia.
Open Salary Calculator MalaysiaEmployees sometimes feel surprised when PCB is higher during a bonus month. The deduction can look large compared with a normal payslip, even though the employee is still receiving additional income.
Quick answer
A bonus can increase the taxable remuneration processed for the month. This may increase the PCB deduction calculated through payroll. The final amount depends on the employee's information and employer payroll calculation.
Malaysian example
Assume a normal month contains:
- Basic salary: RM5,000
- Normal PCB: RM200
A bonus month contains:
- Basic salary: RM5,000
- Bonus: RM3,000
- Higher PCB for that month
The employee should compare normal take-home pay with bonus-month take-home pay. A higher deduction does not automatically mean the employee received less overall.
Why it feels painful
The bonus is shown as one extra payment, while the higher deduction is shown clearly on the same payslip. This can make the deduction feel unusually large.
However, payroll calculations may consider more than one simple monthly percentage.
Separate normal salary and bonus
For planning, keep these separate:
- Normal monthly salary
- Bonus or one-time payment
- Normal deductions
- Bonus-month deductions
- Final extra net cash
This helps the employee understand what is recurring and what only applies to that month.
Factors that may affect actual PCB
Actual payroll may consider taxable remuneration, employee tax information, previous adjustments, benefits, perquisites, payroll method and rounding.
Because of this, a public calculator should describe the result as an estimate.
What employees should check
- Confirm the bonus amount
- Check whether other one-time items were included
- Compare PCB with a normal month
- Check final take-home pay
- Ask payroll about unclear adjustments
