Quick answer

Take-home pay is the amount you receive after employee deductions. In Malaysia, common deductions may include EPF, SOCSO, EIS, PCB and other payroll deductions.

KiraBoss can estimate take-home pay, but the result should be verified with your employer or payroll team.

Simple Malaysian example

Assume your gross salary is RM5,000. Your payslip may include employee EPF, SOCSO, EIS, PCB if applicable and other deductions.

So your bank amount may be lower than RM5,000. This is normal because gross salary is not the same as take-home salary.

What affects take-home pay?

Common factors include basic salary, fixed allowance, bonus, commission, overtime, taxable claims, non-taxable reimbursements, EPF settings, SOCSO and EIS applicability, PCB tax deduction and other company deductions.

Different payroll systems may treat some items differently, especially claims, overtime, benefits and one-time payments.

Gross salary vs net salary

Gross salary is the amount before deductions. Net salary or take-home pay is what you receive after deductions.

For example, gross salary RM5,000 minus total deductions RM700 gives take-home pay RM4,300.

Bonus month can look different

A bonus month can feel painful because the total taxable income for that month may be higher. This can affect PCB or other payroll calculations depending on how the employer processes it.

This is why a normal month and a bonus month should be checked separately.

Claims and reimbursements

Not every payment is treated the same. Some reimbursements may not be part of statutory wage or taxable income, while some perquisites may be taxable. This depends on the nature of the payment and payroll treatment.

If unsure, ask your payroll team how the item is classified.
